It is believed that the factor is principally related to contamination of the lakes by sea water, during periodic very high tides, by onshore winds, or prior to isostatic uplift. Bromine is a well- documented trace component of seawater, and while the latter is not alkaline it may have contributed to a raising of the pH by depositing carbonate debris.
