Exploration Geochemical Applications
1. As a Pathfinder

Because of its large capture cross-section for slow neutrons, Ir is more amenable to neutron-activation analysis than other platinum-group elements, even though it is invariably less abundant than Pd and Pt. Therefore, in regions perceived to have high PGE potential, it constitutes a potential pathfinder for such deposits
